2.   Identify two key principles of successful adult instruction according to Stolovitch and Keeps (Telling Ain't Training, 2002)?

Your Answers =

Our Answers = Experience and Action. Stolovitch and Keeps, following in the path of Knowles, believe that experience and action are two of the four key key principles of successful adult learning. The other two they identify are readiness and autonomy. While "reward" is an important motivator for both adults and children, immmediate gratification is not a universal requirement for engaging adult learners. Similarly, while it is always desirable to have clarity in both lessons and instructions, this is not one of the four key principles Stolovitch and Keeps identify.

3.   Instructional articles are primarily a way to put lecture material online.

Your Answer =

Our Answer = False. While not entirely false, we feel that this statement greatly oversimplifies the role of instructional articles. Like lectures, instructional articles are designed to communicate information, but unlike most lectures they should be interactive and engaging. Also, unlike traditional lectures instructional articles can be the context or "launch pad" for other online experiences, like case studies and simulations, that enhance and extend the learning experience.

If you checked, "Keep students on a linear path through the lesson," this is not necessarily wrong. Most instructional articles, like this one, are most commonly read in a linear way from start to finish; however, if you restrict students to follow only a fixed, linear path this may frustrate some of them. It is a good idea to provide an index of the articles main subject. While this may not be used extensively on the first reading, if students come back to your article they will appreciate having more direct access to specific subtopics.

Similarly, while it may often be a good idea to "Use the latest technology to provide a rich learning experience," if the student audience is not have access to high-speed network connections, the use of advanced technology may be more frustrating than helpful. When designing and online course, it is always important to make sure you understand the capabilities of the technology that your students will be using.
